Roadside guardrails are used to protect vehicles and the people inside them from collisions with natural or man-made objects located on the side of the road. It is important to note that a vehicle striking a traffic guardrail may damage both the vehicle/passengers and the guardrail itself. Damage caused by a collision with a guardrail is generally less severe than a collision with components located behind the guardrail, so traffic barriers represent a compromise between these two considerations. In addition to protecting vehicles, traffic barriers are also used to screen pedestrians, maintenance/construction workers, or cyclists from irregular traffic. In its most basic form, a traffic barrier is designed to prevent vehicles leaving the roadway from striking a fixed object. Guardrails first block an accident vehicle and then cause it to change direction. Because of the variability of vehicle impacts and the damaging effects at high speeds, comprehensive full-scale damage testing should be introduced to ensure the safety and reliability of traffic barriers to be used.

There are many sizes and shapes of guardrails available. The choice of guardrail type depends on a variety of factors, including the environment in which the highway is located as well as speed and traffic volume.
